A closet design is only as good as the numbers it's built from. This guide walks you through measuring any closet — reach-in, walk-in, L-shaped, U-shaped, or an open wall — the same way our designers do it, then submitting those numbers for a free 3D design and price. It takes about fifteen minutes, and doing it properly here is what keeps your design from needing a second trip.
Find your closet below. The shape decides how many walls you measure and what you letter them — and every later step refers back to Wall A, Wall B, Wall C. Stand in the doorway looking in, and letter the walls left to right starting with the wall directly facing you. If your closet doesn't match any of these exactly, pick the closest one and tell us the difference in the notes; odd rooms are the reason we offer a fully custom line.
Wall A only
One usable back wall, roughly 24" deep, with sliding, bi-fold, or hinged doors across the front. You stand outside it, not in it. The most common closet in California homes.
Wall A · walkway
You step inside, but storage runs along a single wall. Needs about 36" of clear walkway in front of the run. Common in smaller walk-ins and closets with a window on the opposite wall.
Walls A + B, facing
Two parallel runs with an aisle between them. The aisle is the constraint: you want at least 42" clear between the two fronts, so a galley needs roughly 8 feet of total width to work comfortably.
Walls A + B, one corner
Two adjacent runs meeting in a corner. The corner is where L-shaped designs go wrong — see the shape-specific notes below, because it quietly costs you 2–4" of usable depth.
Walls A + B + C
Storage on three walls, door on the fourth. Two corners to account for, and you need about 42" of clear floor in the middle so drawers and doors open without collision.
Wall A, no enclosure
No closet at all — a bedroom wall, a loft alcove, or a converted nook where the wardrobe becomes the storage. Measured the same way, but ceiling height and what's above matter far more.
Take these seven in order, for every wall in your shape. A reach-in means doing it once for Wall A. A U-shape means doing steps 2 and 4 three times — once each for A, B, and C.
Floor to ceiling at the left end of the wall, then again at the right end. Write down both, even when they match.
They often don't. Floors settle and ceilings aren't poured level, and a closet that's 96" on one side and 94½" on the other needs a design that accounts for it. If the two differ by more than about ½", say so in the notes — it changes how we scribe the tall units.
Wall to wall, horizontally, at three heights: just above the baseboard, at about 36", and near the ceiling. Keep the tape taut and level.
Record the smallest of the three. That's the number the cabinets have to pass through. Walls bow, drywall builds up in corners, and the difference between the widest and narrowest reading is routinely a half inch — occasionally two inches in older homes.
From the back wall to the front edge of the closet, at each end of the wall. If the tape bows in the corner, hook the 1" mark against the back wall, read the number, and subtract 1.
A reach-in is typically 24" deep. Under 22" and hanging clothes rub the doors; 26–28" is ideal for a walk-in run. If yours is under 22", tell us — it doesn't rule out a design, it changes which one.
Return walls (also called wing walls) are the short stubs of wall on either side of a reach-in opening, between the door casing and the side wall. Measure each one separately — they're rarely equal, and they determine how far a unit can extend before it disappears behind the door frame.
The header is the wall above the opening. Measure from the top of the door casing to the ceiling. It tells us whether a top shelf can run the full width or has to stop short.
Record four things: width including the casing and trim, height, type — hinged, sliding, pocket, or bi-fold — and which way it swings.
A hinged door swinging into the closet eats about 36" of floor and rules out drawers in its arc. Sliding doors need roughly 24" of clearance and permanently block half the opening. This is the single most overlooked measurement, and the one most likely to force a redesign.
Walk the closet and note anything that interrupts a flat, empty wall: outlets, light switches, vents and registers, windows, light fixtures, sprinkler heads, plumbing access panels, attic hatches, exposed wiring, a water heater or electrical panel, structural bump-outs, and the baseboard.
For each one, give us its size and how far it sits from the nearest corner and from the floor. "There's an outlet on the left wall" is not usable. "Outlet, 4½" x 2¾", 14" from the left corner, 16" off the floor" is a design we can build.
Baseboard matters more than people expect. Note its height and how far it stands proud of the wall. Most closet systems either scribe around it or sit on top of it, and that decision changes every vertical dimension in the design.
Tell us what's on the floor — carpet, hardwood, LVT, tile — and whether it's staying. Carpet compresses under load, so a system set on carpet settles differently than one on a hard floor, and if you're replacing the floor after installation the base height changes.
For the ceiling, note whether it's flat, sloped, vaulted, or has a soffit or bulkhead dropping down. If it slopes, see the notes for your shape below.
The seven measurements cover it, but be thorough about the opening: the finished opening width, both return walls, and the header. Also check whether the side walls are square to the back wall — hold your tape diagonally corner to corner both ways and compare. If the two diagonals differ by more than ½", the closet isn't square and we'll design in a scribe allowance.
Add the walkway depth: from the face of Wall A to the opposite wall. You need about 36" of clear floor left over after the system depth for the closet to feel usable — a 24" run in a 54" room leaves 30", which is tight but workable; the same run in a 44" room is not.
Measure both walls independently — do not measure one and assume the other matches. Then measure the room's total width at the floor, at 36", and at the ceiling, because the aisle is what's left after both runs are installed. Two 24" runs in a 96" room leave a 48" aisle; the same runs in an 84" room leave 36", which works but feels snug when both sides have drawers that open toward each other.
Measure each leg from the inside corner outward — corner to the door, corner to the obstruction, corner to the end of the wall. Don't measure the full wall and subtract; errors compound.
Then check whether the corner is actually square. Measure each wall at the floor, at 36", and near the ceiling. In older homes corners commonly deviate two to three degrees, which reads as nothing to the eye and as a visible gap once a tall panel goes in.
Three walls, two corners, both with the same overlap problem as an L. Measure each wall from its inside corner outward, and measure the clear floor between the two side runs — you want about 42". Below roughly 36" of clear middle, a U-shape starts fighting itself and a galley or L layout will store more.
Measure the full run of available wall, floor to ceiling height at both ends, and — critically — what bounds the run on each side: a window casing, a door swing, the edge of a soffit, a radiator, a light switch. An open run has no walls to stop it, so those boundaries are the design constraint. Note the ceiling height carefully; wardrobes are typically about 72" tall and what happens in the gap above matters.
These can appear in any shape. Add three numbers: the ceiling height at the tall end, the height at the short end (at the knee wall, measure floor to where the slope begins), and the horizontal distance between those two points. That's enough to reconstruct the angle. Then photograph it — a slope is one of the few things a photo communicates better than numbers.
Measurements tell us what fits in the room. This tells us what goes in the closet, and it's the half most people skip. A 96" wall can be built as 96" of hanging or as a mix of hanging, drawers, and shoes — the numbers don't decide that, you do.
Count roughly, in linear feet of rod or just in garments. Our designers convert it:

Then tell us the things that don't hang: how many pairs of shoes and whether they're mostly flats or heels, whether you need a hamper or laundry pull-out, whether you fold or hang jeans, whether anything long — gowns, overcoats, wedding dress storage — needs a full-height section, and whether you want a seat, a mirror, an island, or a built-in desk.
Photos catch what a tape measure misses. Empty the closet, turn on every light, and take these five:
Add a sixth of anything unusual — the electrical panel, the attic hatch, the angled wall you couldn't quite describe. Photos of an odd condition save more back-and-forth than any other single thing you can send.
You don't need to design your closet — that's our job. But these are the numbers our designers work from, and knowing them helps you sanity-check whether your space can do what you're hoping.

These are industry standards, not Apex-specific limits. Your designer will adjust every one of them to your height, your wardrobe, and your walls.
