Six Features That Determine
Longevity & Performance

Not all cabinets are built the same. These are the construction details that separate cabinets that last 20+ years from those that deteriorate within 5.

01

Soft-Close Hinges & Drawer Glides

Integrated soft-close mechanisms gently absorb momentum so doors and drawers close silently without slamming. This protects both the cabinet box and hinges over time, reducing wear-and-tear significantly. All Apex cabinet lines include soft-close as standard — never an upgrade.

02

Dovetail Drawer Box Construction

Dovetail joints interlock the four corners of a drawer box using angular cuts that resist pull-out forces. Unlike stapled or glued boxes, dovetail joints become stronger with use. They are the benchmark of premium cabinetry and indicate a manufacturer who takes internal quality seriously.

03

Plywood Cabinet Box

Plywood is made from cross-laminated wood veneers, giving it superior strength-to-weight ratio and moisture resistance compared to particleboard or MDF. In humid California climates — especially near dishwashers and sinks — a plywood box resists warping and swelling. It also holds screws more reliably for hardware longevity.

04

Full Overlay Doors

Full overlay doors cover the entire face frame, exposing minimal cabinet frame between doors and drawers. This creates a clean, seamless appearance — particularly valued in modern and transitional kitchens. Partial overlay (where more frame shows) is common in builder-grade cabinets and gives a more traditional, dated look.

05

Adjustable Shelving

Shelf pins in a series of pre-drilled holes (a "line bore" system) allow you to reposition shelves at custom heights for tall appliances, oversized platters, or specialized storage. Fixed shelves are a sign of economy construction. Adjustable shelves give you a kitchen that adapts to how you actually cook and store.

Flexible Storage
06

Finish Quality & UV Resistance

Cabinet finishes in California must withstand direct sunlight, heat, and daily cleaning. High-quality finishes use a multi-step catalyzed lacquer or thermofoil process that resists yellowing, peeling, and moisture penetration. Look for UV-inhibitor coatings on white and light cabinets to prevent the yellowing common in cheaper budget lines.

Anatomy of a Quality Cabinet

Understanding how cabinets are built helps you evaluate what you're buying and ask the right questions in our showroom.

1
Soft-Close Concealed Hinges

6-way adjustable European hinges with integrated soft-close dampers. Positions door precisely and eliminates slamming. Adjust left/right, up/down, and in/out after installation.

2
Dovetail Drawer Box

Interlocking angled joints on all four corners create a mechanical bond that strengthens over time. Paired with full-extension undermount soft-close drawer glides rated for 100+ lbs.

3
Plywood Cabinet Box

½" or ¾" plywood panels for walls, floor, and top. Superior screw-holding and moisture resistance versus particleboard. Maintains structural integrity near plumbing and appliances.

4
Full Overlay Door Alignment

Doors cover the full visible frame, leaving only a uniform 3–4mm gap between adjacent doors. Creates a clean, furniture-grade appearance consistent in modern and transitional kitchens.

5
Line-Bore Adjustable Shelves

Rows of 5mm shelf-pin holes drilled on 32mm centers allow infinite shelf height adjustment. Standard in European frameless systems; increasingly common in quality American-style boxes.

Cabinet System Types

Face-Frame vs. Frameless European

Understanding the difference between these two fundamental cabinet systems helps you choose the right style, maximize interior storage, and match the aesthetic you're after.

American Style

Face-Frame Cabinets

Classic construction with a solid wood frame attached to the front of the box

  • Traditional Shaker, raised-panel, and beaded-inset door styles
  • Extremely common — large supply of in-stock colors and sizes
  • Structural face frame adds rigidity to the cabinet
  • Works well in traditional, transitional, and farmhouse kitchens
  • 1–2" narrower interior opening due to face-frame width

Best suited for: homeowners seeking classic styling and the widest color/style selection

Door Profiles

Choosing the Right Door Style

Door style is the most visible design decision in a kitchen. Each profile carries a distinct aesthetic and pairs differently with hardware, countertops, and lighting.

Shaker

Five-piece frame with flat center panel. The most versatile profile in kitchen design — works in modern, transitional, and traditional settings.

Most Popular →
Slab / Flat Panel

Single unbroken panel with no frame or detail. The cleanest, most contemporary profile — ideal for European frameless systems and minimalist kitchens.

Modern / Euro →
Slim Shaker

Narrower stile and rail version of the classic shaker. Gives a more refined, architectural look while retaining the profile. Popular in two-tone kitchen designs.

Transitional →
Wood Grain Panel

Textured or printed wood-grain surface on a flat panel. Adds warmth and organic character without the maintenance of real wood. Popular in oak, walnut, and textured gray finishes.

Natural / Warm →
Buyer's Checklist

10 Questions to Ask
Before You Buy

Whether you're buying from us or comparing options elsewhere, these questions will help you evaluate cabinet quality quickly and confidently.

Browse Our Cabinet Lines
Is the box made from plywood or particleboard?

Plywood is the gold standard. Particleboard is cost-cut and susceptible to moisture damage near sinks and dishwashers.

Are soft-close hinges and glides standard or an add-on?

Budget lines often charge extra for soft-close. At Apex, it comes standard on every cabinet line — no upgrade required.

How are the drawer boxes jointed?

Dovetail joints indicate a premium build. Stapled or glued boxes signal economy construction and shorter lifespan.

What is the drawer glide weight rating?

Look for 75 lbs minimum; 100 lbs is ideal for heavy pots and pans. Under-mounted glides are more durable than side-mounted.

Are the shelves adjustable or fixed?

Fixed shelves indicate cost-cutting and limit your storage options. Adjustable shelves on a line-bore system are a must.

Is the finish catalyzed lacquer or thermofoil?

Catalyzed lacquer is harder and more durable. Thermofoil can delaminate near heat sources. Ask specifically how finish is applied.

What warranty is included?

Reputable manufacturers offer limited lifetime warranties on box construction and multi-year coverage on hardware and finish.

Is this item in-stock in California?

Long lead times from out-of-state suppliers delay entire projects. Apex maintains live local inventory across 5 California locations.
